Stuart Hamm

Stuart Hamm
Through his innovative work as a solo artist and his contributions as a sideman to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, Stuart Hamm has firmly established himself as one of the most influential electric bassists of the past half-century. Extending the non-traditional function of the electric bass previously revolutionized by Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke in the 1970's, Hamm helped to reshape the contemporary concept of the bass guitar as an unaccompanied instrument with the utilization of polyphonic, two-handed tapping, slapping and popping techniques, chords, and harmonics. Although Hamm certainly wasn't the first bass player to debut during the 1980's and employ an unorthodox approach to playing the electric bass, he was undoubtedly at the forefront of his generation who effectively fused the application of these unconventional techniques. As one of today's leading bassists, Hamm has released four critically-acclaimed studio recordings. ... Read More.

Before a live audience and an all-star panel of judges including bass greats Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Anthony Jackson, Will Lee, and drummer Gregg Bissonette, Schmidt performed three compositions for unaccompanied bass guitar at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. "If this competition was about who could display the best knowledge and application of music theory, I wouldn't have been there. If it was about who could play the fastest or demonstrate the most mind-boggling technique, I wouldn't have been there, but I possessed something that the judges felt was emotive and musical, and that is what this competition was all about," said Schmidt. Schmidt also stated, "I thought I did exceptionally well considering this was the first time I had ever performed solo bass in front of a live audience." ... Read More.

Over the past twenty years, Carbonne has spent time in private studies with fretless bass virtuoso Alain Caron and former John McLaughlin Trio bass great Dominique Di Piazza. After years of experimenting with various types of basses including 4, 5, and 6-string models, Carbonne conceived a sub-contra bass tuned one octave below standard bass tuning, and today, he researches the various ways of using sub-basses within the context of ensemble configurations, as a soloist, and pedagogically. ...
