Nordstrand Pickups

Carey Nordstrand began building pickups out of necessity for his custom basses when he couldn't find what he wanted from the normal suppliers. His first pickups were dual coils, and he made them with some very rudimentary tools. After some sonic successes in designing pickups for his basses, he decided to offer them to other builders and even to dealers. He started selling a set here and a set there. Those humble beginnings have evolved, through the acquisition of some keys tools and a lot of work, into a fledgling pickup company with a very strong desire to improve the sonic landscape for amplified guitars and basses.

The NJ4 is a vintage single coil J-style pickup made with '60's-era correct heavy formvar wire and alnico V magnets. In winding these pickups, Nordstrand uses a simulated hand wound pattern that lowers the resonant peak of the pickup resulting in a pleasing yet present high end. These pickups have a very even and full sound with that snap and grind associated with the classic basses of that time. The NJ4 includes black covers with exposed pole pieces.
