Bass Lessons Online - Slap Bass & Beyond
"Sunyata" is a swinging, uptempo "head" that was recorded on my 4th solo project, Arrhythmia. The chord changes are based upon those found in "Countdown," the classic jazz standard by John Coltrane. "Sunyata" was composed utilizing slap arpeggio techniques, and it really came to life when saxophonist Ted Belledin and I created a counterpoint melody to be played alongside the slapped bass melody. ... Bass Tips Of The Week
Jazz Improvisation - "Scalar Neighbor Note From Above"
Neighbor notes are among the most used ornaments and can be heard in melodies/solos in practically every style of music. A neighbor note is simply a note that leaves a tone by a step and then returns to the same note. They may or may not be a member of the sounding chord or scale, and neighbor notes may be found above or below the target note. The target tone is generally a chord tone, but it may also be a tension (9th, 11th, or 13th). Although the target tone is ordinarily placed on a downbeat, the metrically strong beats within the measure (1, 2, 3, or 4), they can be found on the upbeat as well. In this lesson, we are going to analyze a very common improvisation technique using scalar neighbor notes from above chord tones and tensions. Scalar neighbor notes are tones that leave a note by a scale step and then return. The scalar neighbor tone will always be a diatonic note or a tone that is found within the scale associated with the sounding chord as dictated by the rules of functional harmony. ... Read More!
Jazz Improvisation - "Double Chromatic Approach Notes From Above"
One of the most conventional devices employed by soloists in modern improvisation is the usage of chromaticism or chromatic ornamentation. Chromaticism may be defined as the presence of notes within a melody or phrase which are not a part of the diatonic scale(s) typically associated, through the rules of functional harmony, with the particular chord type that is sounding at that time. Chromatic notes or non-diatonic tones usually resolve, diatonically, to either chord tones or scale tones (tensions). These chord or scale notes are referred to as target tones. The target tone is generally a chord tone, but it also might be a tension (9th, 11th, or 13th). Although target notes are normally placed on metrically strong downbeats within the measure (beats 1, 2, 3, or 4), they can be found on the upbeats as well. The double chromatic approach note technique will be comprised of both diatonic and non-diatonic tones which may be located above or even below target notes. In this lesson, we are going to analyze double chromatic approach notes from above chord tones and tensions. This approach note concept will help intensify the underlying element of tension and release (dissonance and consonance) in phrases due to the number of notes played before being resolved to a target tone. ...
