Premier Bass Guitars
Located at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains just north of Denver, Premier Bass Guitars is the only bass guitar specialty store in the state of Colorado. Established by Dan Basica in 2011, Premier Bass Guitars maintains an extensive inventory of fretted and fretless 4, 5, and 6-string bass guitars, acoustic bass guitars, electric upright basses, vintage and used instruments, amplifiers, combo amps, effects, and a broad selection of popular accessories from the most reputable names in the music industry. Employing a professional staff who shares your passion for bass and is available to assist you in making an informed purchase locally or while shopping online, Premier Bass Guitars is the destination for all bass enthusiasts in Colorado and abroad.

In this interview, Dan Basica discusses Premier Bass Guitars.

Could you tell us how Premier Bass Guitars got started?

Since moving to Colorado in 1999, I have found it difficult to find unique bass products here. During our market research phase a year ago, I visited a large number of music stores in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs. While I certainly found a large selection of some of the most popular bass gear at the large chain stores, most of the independent stores carried a very limited selection of bass products. Denver has had a few bass shops in the past, but those are all gone. I wanted to create a store focused specifically on the bass player featuring some of the products I always wanted but could never try in person.

Which brands of basses, amps, and cabinets do you regularly keep in stock?

We stock a great selection of basses from Boulder Creek, G&L, Lakland, Martin Keith, Mike Lull, Modulus, MTD, Renaissance, Reverend, Roscoe, Sadowsky, Surine, Veillette, and Zon. We'll be adding basses from Rob Elrick and other builders in the coming months. For amplification, we carry products from 65 Amps, Aguilar, Bergantino, Gallien Krueger, Genz Benz, Mesa, and Phil Jones Bass. We're also looking to expand our amplification lines over time. We keep a great selection of the brands we carry in stock so customers can try and compare various models.

What product lines are your best sellers?

Because we've only been open since late 2011, we haven't seen what we could call any real trends. However, Sadowsky, Lakland, Reverend, and Roscoe basses have sold well. For amplification products, Aguilar, Bergantino, and Gallien Kruger are doing quite nicely. We are selling products from all the lines we carry, and the interest level from our customers is in line with our expectations.

Do you sell only high-end gear or do you offer equipment across all price ranges?

We focus on the midrange to high-end gear as that is how we can differentiate our store in the marketplace. The MTD Kingston and G&L Tribute basses represent our starting point at around $600.

Can you provide instrument or amplification repairs?

In the store, we can perform setups and minor repairs and modifications such as pickup or tuner replacements. For service that requires more expertise, we can refer customers to some excellent luthiers and electronics experts in the Denver area.

What kinds of accessories do you sell?

We stock around 150 different sets of strings from D'Addario, DR Strings, Dunlop, Lakland, La Bella, MTD, Rotosound, Sadowsky, and Thomastik Infeld. We stock a huge variety of low B and high C singles from D'Addario, DR Strings, Dunlop, and MTD so customers can mix and match string gauges to suit their preferences. We also stock some unusual strings such as 12 and 8-string sets, piccolo sets, baritone guitar strings, and strings made especially for the Fender Bass VI and Jerry Jones 6-string basses.

We carry a wide selection of bass effects and signal chain products from Aguilar, Dunlop/MXR, and Radial. The MXR Bass Innovations group has been focusing on the bass player market and has created some excellent bass pedals including the M87 Bass Compressor, the M84 Bass Fuzz Deluxe, and the M288 Bass Octave. Interest in effects for bass is high, and we're in the process of expanding our effects offerings.

We also carry some essentials such as cables, straps, strap locks, and bridges.

Do you purchase and sell used gear?

We don't normally purchase used gear, but we do have a very generous consignment program. We're starting to ramp up our selection of used basses and amplification products with this program. We may occasionally purchase a used item or take it in as a trade, but that would be the exception rather than the rule.

Can bassists place an order for a custom-built instrument?

Yes, we are more than happy to assist customers in placing a special order from our manufacturers. We carry a wide selection from all of the brands we represent so customers can experience the differences between woods, pickups, and electronics before making their purchase decision.

Is worldwide shipping available for most of your merchandise?

Our dealership agreements may restrict us from selling some products internationally as the manufacturer may already have a sales channel or distributor in a particular county. Shipping basses internationally has become more expensive as the U.S. Postal Service has set some size restrictions and insurance limitations. For international customers, it is best to call us so we can discuss the best shipping options to specific locations.

Are private bass lessons offered at your shop?

We partner with several excellent local bass instructors who can provide lessons at the store in one of our private demo/lesson rooms or at a location that works best for the instructor and student.

Does your shop host bass clinics or other bass-related events?

We hosted our first bass clinic featuring Bryan Beller in January and had great attendance from the Boulder and Denver bass community. We'll be doing more clinics in the future with plans to have four to six clinics per year. We are also a co-sponsor of the Rocky Mountain Bass Slam, which is an annual weekend event of all things bass hosted by Paul Rogalski of Mojo's Music Academy in Longmont, Colorado.
