John Flitcraft - July 2004

John Flitcraft
Biography: I am a bass player living and working in Los Angeles, California. I started playing bass in high school but didn't take it seriously until I joined a band called The Brood. One day at rehearsal, the guitar player played Allan Holdsworth's Metal Fatigue for me. I was floored. The music had the energy of rock but with sophisticated harmonic and rhythmic structures. I knew immediately that this was the kind of music I wanted to play. I decided it was time to get serious and enrolled in B.I.T. While there, I was lucky enough to hook up with Gary Willis for private lessons outside of school. Willis really helped me focus on what it was I wanted to do on bass. I studied with Willis from 1987-1993 and still take lessons from him when he's in Los Angeles. I graduated from B.I.T. in 1988. In 1991, I went to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, I decided that when I got back to L.A., I would take any gig I could get. Once back, I started playing casuals, r&b gigs, coffee house gigs, and playing in pit orchestras for musical theater. I did studio work, gave lessons, and played in a speed metal band. I did anything I could to make a living as a musician.

I found myself back at B.I.T. as an instructor from 1996-1997. In 1999, along with Jeff Miley (guitarist) and Steve Holmes (drummer), I started a jazz/fusion band called Altered. In 2003, Altered recorded its debut cd. Influenced by Tribal Tech and Allan Holdsworth, Altered is an aggressive mix of jazz, funk, and rock. My bass influences are: Gary Willis, Anthony Jackson, Jimmy Johnson, John Patitucci, and Jaco Pastorius.

Gigs: I'm currently playing gigs with Altered in Los Angeles at La Ve Lee and The Baked Potato. I'm also freelancing, playing musicals (twenty different ones and counting), casuals, studio work, and teaching bass privately.

Recordings: Recordings that I've appeared on include The Brood (Profile Records, 1986), Altered (2003), and numerous demos.
