Lodo Bass Bash - August 4-6, 2006

The Lodo Bass Bash
Beginning on Friday, August 4, bassists from around the United States will converge for a series of educational workshops and performances at the inaugural Lodo Bass Bash in Denver, Colorado. Although the concept of a bass-centric event is not a new one, this will be the first gathering of its kind to be held in the Mile High City. Over the span of two nights and two days, bassists will have the opportunity to meet and receive instruction from some of today's most regarded electric bassists at this non-profit event, and registered attendees will be eligible to win thousands of dollars in prizes courtesy of Lodo Bass Bash sponsors.

In the following interview, Lodo Bass Bash founder and director Christopher Cardone discusses this year's event.

What is the Lodo Bass Bash?

I have friends throughout the United States who host similar events including the Bozeman Bass Bash, BassUp, BassQuake, and so on. Since I am generally unable to travel to these other locations, I wanted to have a similar event here in Denver. We picked August because it fell between the other bass bashes and similar music events. We wanted to make sure our event didn't conflict with any of them or the NAMM show.

I get asked what "Lodo" refers to from a lot of people who don't live in Denver. About 10 years ago, there was a revitalization effort in Denver to turn a warehouse district into a "micro-community." Today, it is an area located downtown that features shopping, night life, condos, and so forth. It was dubbed "Lower Downtown," but most people simply call it Lodo.

All the clinics are being held at the Swallow Hill Music Association, a non-profit group dedicated to music education and performance. The nightly concerts are taking place at "Denver's Best Jazz Club," Dulcinea's 100th Monkey (717 East Colfax Ave.). Jay, the owner, and I have known each other for about eight years, and he was extremely helpful in getting this event off the ground by letting us use his club.

Who are the clinicians for this year's Lodo Bass Bash?

We have an amazing lineup this year including Yves Carbonne, Jean Baudin, Stewart McKinsey, Trip Wamsley, Darren Michaels, and Gregory Bruce Campbell. I'll be performing at the nightly concerts, but I will not be teaching any clinics. I am so very lucky to be able to host this event and play with such amazing bassists. It was a shame that one of our clinicians, Brady Muckelroy, had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict, but I hope he will be here next year.

What will they be teaching?

They are going to be covering a little bit of everything from rhythm and groove playing to solo bass music and beyond. There will be many different styles of music and approaches to bass playing represented throughout the event.

Will everyone in attendance, regardless of playing ability, be able to utilize the information presented in the clinics?

Yes. This is an event for bassists of all playing levels and all styles.

Are bassists encouraged to bring their own instruments to the clinics in order to participate?

It is highly recommended that everyone bring a bass but no amp. Basses aren't required, but people will get much more out of the clinics if they are able to experience a hands-on approach.

Will any part of the Lodo Bass Bash be recorded for a possible DVD or CD release?

We have a video crew coming to record the entire event. We will be releasing "The Lodo Bass Bash - Night and Day." It will be a 2-DVD set consisting of highlights of all the events. The "Day" DVD will contain highlights of all the clinics, and the "Night" DVD will be feature highlights of the nightly concerts. Each DVD will contain about 120 minutes of material. We are shooting for a release date of late November so it will be available for the Christmas holidays.

What is the cost for the various clinics and concerts, and where can tickets be purchased?

It depends on which specific events you plan on attending. The cost for a weekend pass to all the events is $65 which includes all of the clinics and concerts. This fee also includes a Lodo Bass Bash t-shirt. Individual event tickets can be purchased to attend only the clinics or the concerts. Concert tickets are $12 for each night, and tickets for the clinics are $30 for each day. There are discounts for students who are under 21 years old and also for those who are members of the Swallow Hill organization. Tickets can be purchased through the Swallow Hill Music Association web site at SwallowHill.com.

Who is sponsoring the Lodo Bass Bash?

We have picked up a lot of great sponsors for our first year including Swallow Hill Music Association, GuitarX, Reininger Music, SIT Strings, Jerzy Drozd Basses, Pigtronix Effects, Accugroove Cabinets, A P C Instruments, Area Five Point One Recording Studios, Adamovic Basses, Bee Basses, Nordstrand Pickups, Epifani Custom Sound, and Spector Basses.

What kinds of prizes will be given away?

GuitarX teamed up with Epifani Custom Sound and Spector Basses for 2 incredible giveaways. We'll be giving away a Spector Legend 4-string bass and an Epifani UL-310 bass cabinet. Pigtronix also donated a couple of their products including the OFO Disnortion and EP-1 Envelope Phaser. There will be lots of other items like strings, pickups, and t-shirts, too.

Will there be any equipment displays at the event?

We didn't have enough room our first year to have sponsor booths, but Westone Audio will be at the event to demonstrate their in-ear monitors. There will be a display with information about all of our sponsors, too. We hope to move next year to another one of Jay's clubs where there will be more room for things like this.

Will the Lodo Bass Bash be an annual event?

I hope so. We have a lot of support in the community so as long as I can do it I will. It is a labor of love because all of the money is going to charity to get musical instruments in the hands of kids who can't afford them. We are working with Reininger Music, and they have a close relationship with the "adopt a student" program at the Pueblo Colorado Songwriters Association.

Who should interested clinicians or sponsors contact in order to become a part of future Lodo Bass Bash's?
