Markus Setzer - July 2003

Markus Setzer
Biography: I was born in 1969 in Osnabr´┐Żck, Germany. When I was still in high school our school band was looking for a bass player. I really wanted to play keyboards. I was anxious to join the guys and play my heart out. The days of piano sonatas were over. But, when we couldn't find a bassist, I had to pick it up in order to move the band forward. Since then I am deeply in love with the instrument. I started with old Led Zeppelin records and tried to translate the lines on the still somewhat unfamiliar fretboard. Shortly thereafter I transcribed pretty much everything I could get my hands on. Transcribing from recordings was the best training I could possibly receive. I slowly incorporated a lot of my idol's coolest licks into my own repertoire. In addition to Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, John Patitucci, Steve Harris, and Geddy Lee, my inspirational roots are musicians like Chick Corea, John Scofield, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and many more. Through Steve Vai (who I was a big fan of for a long time) I discovered Stu Hamm, whose rendition of the Moonlight Sonata for solo bass threw me back into the study room of my cigar smoking and ascetics philosophizing piano teacher. After school a friend asked me to play some gigs in a Beatles cover band. That was the beginning of my career as a professional musician. I played cover, top 40, and a lot of latin, jazz, and other musical gigs. In 1999 a dream materialized for me: to form a duo with a female singer. Sabine (my wife) made this dream come true. With her by my side I have realized the possibility to transform everything that comes out of me into music. To accompany her tunes is such a great pleasure, and my bass arrangements have evolved naturally. In return she blesses my bass compositions with beautiful vocal lines which I could have never dreamed of. Since 1998 I have written six books for KDM/Alfred-Publishing. The Bass Masterclass Series consists of books about Jaco, Marcus Miller, Paul McCartney, and Sting. The last one is about scales and chord shapes on bass. From 2001 I have written for the very popular German magazine, Gitarre & Bass, which is available in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the Netherlands. I also wrote workshops in the Gitarre-Exclusiv magazine. Since 1994 I have played for Magnus Guitars at the Musik Messe in Frankfurt. I have also played clinics for TC Electronics, Alfred Publishing, Yamaha Basses, and Eden Electronics in several stores and events. Along with Sabine, I performed at the European Bass Day in Holland in March 2003.

Gigs: First of all, I tour with my wife, Sabine, as our duet, Reimer|Setzer. But, I am also a freelancer and session bass player in Hamburg. The gigs are alternating. I play musical, cover, top 40 (not very often but sometimes I have to), bar-jazz, and latin. Most of my time I spend in our duo. It's a lot of work because we have to do the studio, booking, management, and everything else by ourselves. I teach a lot, and that is a lot of fun and a great experience. I also do "Groove-Sessions" for Bass-Player because the groove is the center and the most important thing for us.

Recordings: The play-alongs of the Bass Masterclass Series: "Play in the Styles of" Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, TM Stevens, Sting, and Paul McCartney

Frizz Feick Panama, "Liebe Liebe" - single, "Seitenspriner" - single (German pop)
Field Cocoon (German-electro-ambient drum 'n bass)
Several jingles for television, radio, and company promotional recordings
Sample CD with upright (Joseph) - sounds and samples
Reimer|Setzer The First Twinkle (duo with voice and bass guitar)
Reimer|Setzer Between The Worlds (duo with voice and bass guitar)
Reimer|Setzer Dance With Me - EP (duo with voice and bass guitar)
Reimer|Setzer The Inner Light (to be released in October 2003)

Gear: My main bass is a Magnus Guitars 7-string Sharkey. I also have a Classic 4-string, a 6-string acoustic bass with nylon strings, and a fretless 6-string Sharkey. Magnus also built me a 5-string jazz bass with a high C-string. My preamp is a Glockenklang Bass Art, powered by a Bugatti stereo amp. I play it through a Glockenklang MK II cabinet. My effects are all from TC Electronics. I play with a D-Two Delay, G-Mayor, G-Minor, and a M3000 for all the reverbs. My strings are from Cocco, and my pickups are from Delano. Last but not least is my big love: a 130 year-old czech upright that I call Joseph. I think it's a big difference between playing acoustic and electric instruments. An acoustic upright gives you exactly the feedback of the energy you put in, honest but sometimes merciless.
